Residential and Retail Development, St Albans
Client: Kennedy Wilson Europe
A city-centre development replacing three small shops with three large retail units at ground floor and 22 new high-end apartments over five storeys.
2 apartments are provided on the ground floor with the remaining 20 located in two blocks addressing a communal garden for the residents at first floor level. Overlooking between adjacent apartments is prevented by angled windows to all habitable rooms.
The approved elevations take reference from the diverse range of architectural styles found along both sides of St Peter’s Street. The alleyway is enlivened with shopfronts, illuminated display boxes and new window and door openings in a decorative brick colonnade.
Following refusal of the first planning application, Boast Architects engaged with the Conservation and Design Officer and the proposals approved by St Albans District Council show the conclusions which were agreed about the detailed design of the high street façade.
