The Bell Public House, Codicote
Client: Aldenham Residential
The development on High Street, Codicote involved the demolition of some single-storey motel buildings at the rear of the site, the construction of 9 residential dwellings, and the conversion of the original Bell Public House into 5 apartments.
There is a mix of 1 and 2 bedroom apartments, 2-4 bedroom two-storey terraced or detached two-storey dwellings, and a single-storey cottage to provide a range of properties in the village.
The concept was to design a development which is sympathetic to the character of Codicote but avoiding a pastiche of existing historical styles from the village. In deciding to avoid copying traditional architecture, Boast Architects felt that a design solution which was complementary to both traditional and contemporary architecture would be appropriate in the Conservation Area.
We worked closely with local residents and North Hertfordshire District Council’s planning and conservation officers to arrive at a design which gained planning approval and surpassed our client’s commercial aspirations.
